Wing Chun Combatives Hawaii Q & A

May 2, 2014 By Sifu Wayde Leave a Comment

Before coming to train in Wing Chun, it is common for people to have questions about what is unique to  the art. I feel that there are many instructors who have done a fine job of writing in detail about acquiring this incredible skill. Like my instructor, I find that there is more value in demonstration than in explanation.  What follows is  a few answers to some common questions.

What kind of Stance does Wing Chun Kung Fu have ?

According to Sifu David Peterson`s  great teacher, the late Sifu Wong Shun Leung, ” All footwork in the system is a derivative of the , Yi Ji Kim Yeung Ma or goat gripping stance.”  Wong states that all footwork including kicking is developed when practicing this particular stance. By maintaining this  stance, one creates one of the strongest structures, the triangle. Although strong in structure, the stance is not rigid as some people believe, but extremely flexible when understood by properly trained practitioners . Whether advancing or retreating by utilizing this stance one is easily able to direct an attack to the ground or offensively use the ground as support for Wing Chun’s unique attacks.

What is a Wing Chun Punch?

Wing Chun uses a vertical punch which originates from what is known as the centerline. By punching vertical , one is able to use the entire body in the attack. The Wing Chun practitioner is also able to employ rapid fire punches, often called “chain punches”.  At the same time , because of structure , be able to use the forearms for pinning the attacker while also combining footwork to kick or sweep.

How should one Breathe in Wing Chun?

Breathing should always be natural and low. A short breath is expelled with each strike. Because of the great importance that I have learned in breathing, a more in depth article will be given in the future.

How can I become a good Wing Chun Student?

To be a good student, one must always do their best. One should train with intention. When training, nothing should exist but the idea of developing your mind ,body and spirit. If you are truly serious and take these concepts to heart, your skills will develop beyond all your expectations.
