The Secrets of Wing Chun

July 13, 2014 By Sifu Wayde Leave a Comment

Many people want to know the secret of Wing Chun Kung Fu and spend their hard earned money trying to find it. I remember when I started training in Wing Chun, a little over 30 years ago, I would buy every book and video tape (Beta tapes by the way), anyway to supplement what I was learning in class. When I would learn something new in class, I would go home that night and practice the technique in the air a few times before sleeping. Me and my Kung Fu brothers would often train on Saturdays or another day to  improve our class performance. I am a true believer in one of the reasons that our class was successful, is that it had a sound curriculum to follow. We all knew where we where and where we where going.

Whether you are doing ballet, learning piano or anything that requires a skill, learning fundamentals is important to have a strong foundation. If someone is really driven to be the best, it is not the advanced, tricky or difficult way that will achieve success , but the patience to persevere through the slow times. If one is not improving and not seeing results for a long time, these are the times to work the fundamentals. The trouble with learning a modified system is that often there is no root. The fundamental movements have been replaced with a more advanced movement and the student is never given the opportunity to work through a basic to understand its progression.

So what are the Secrets to Wing Chun Kung Fu ? The secret is finding a qualified instructor who will work on fundamentals and progressively worked to advance techniques. As far as Wing Chun  is concerned, to maintain its integrity of being a fighting art , working scenarios that imitate real life situations is essential.
